Annual Director’s Report MRSS September 7, 2013

  • April 24, 2012PSF/CSP inform us we have been awarded a $3095 grantfor continued restorative plantings along the greenway. Partners are VHHS, CIB, FVWC, FVIPC, Sts’ailes Rights and Title and Friends of the Harrison Forest.
  • May 8, 2012: Mark Johnson DFO Community Advisor Eastern Fraser Valley visits and suggests Streamkeepers and the hotel might work together to improve the habitat along the lower river.  A letter was sent to Danny Crowell, General Manger on March 23, 2013 but the hotel has no schedule to upgrade (riparian).
  • June 28, 2012: MRSkS incorporated under the Society Act of BC
  • June 23, 2012: Janne and Mary attend the Salmon Enhancement Program’s Ugly Bug Ball at Rocha’s Brooksdale Environmental Centre in Surrey. Our newly completed MRSkS tri-fold info board is put on display
  • July 2012: PSF/CSP Grant storm drain marking through VHHS with assistance of CIB and Harrison Daycare
  • July 2012: Inventory List updated. Value $1 562. 27 including water testing equipment, vests, tools, camera, and paper & ink cartridges. Backpack and Chestwaders purchased after update and valued at ~$540
  • Aug 21 2012: letter to mayor and council urging them to define the pathway cut into the 300-block riparian in November 2010 with gravel and to also gravel the grassy pathway in the 200-block to transform the “private property look” into an inviting public pathway
  • September 15, 2012: Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, 11 participants, Bear Aware Booth, 28 lbs. Garbage, daily assignment of a Village worker to beach litter pick up cut down amount picked up compared to 2011
  • September 16, 2012: Letter to Agassiz-Harrison Observer editor on results of GCSC,
  • October 17 & 18, 2012: PSF/CSP Grant Public Planting Days. 380-shrubs installed in 200 to 400 blocks of greenway. 25 volunteers including DFO Community Advisor. Pizza lunch funded by compensation funds.
  • October 21 2012: letter to editor reporting on October 17 & 18, 2012 public planting
  • October 25, 2012: PSF/CSP Grant planting by MRSkS members. 20-water plants installed at170 Cedar to replace those washed out by high water in spring 2012 now cottonwood logs on bank
  • November 15, 2012: MRSkS apply to VHHS Grant to Groups for $1000
  • November 25, 2012: MRSkS director’s tour BC Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration AGM delegates around the lagoon, 170 Cedar and greenway restorations.
  • November 27, 2012: PSF/CSP Grant planting MRSkS members 22 sword fern, 10 cattails and 4 slough sedge, funds left over from initial Oct 17-18 planting
  • January 23, 2013: Public Involvement Program Grant Application submitted fro $1146 for an in river cleanup on Rivers Day 2013. We were not successful.
  • January 30, 2013: MRSkS puts up an official website at no cost to the Society www.miamiriverstreamkeepers.9k.com

Cutthroat Trout

The Miami River was sampled from McCallum road to Harrison Lake. Sampling occurred over two weeks in May and two weeks in July. Fish were trapped using ‘Feddes’ traps that were set overnight and baited with cat food. Traps were set approximately 150m apart extending almost the entire length of the Miami River.
